Why the Right Charger Matters
Using the right battery charger (and charging your battery properly) plays a big role in how long your battery lasts. A good-quality charger is just as important.
Older chargers will charge your batteries and then turn off, but they will not turn back on to maintain a full charge. Newer chargers, often called “smart chargers,” automatically shut off when the batteries are fully charged and turn back on when charging is needed.
Know Your Charger Type
There are different chargers for lead-acid, AGM, and lithium batteries, and each works differently. It’s important to use the charger exactly as it was designed. Using the wrong charger for the wrong application can cause serious damage. Always choose the right charger for your application.
Heat Is the Enemy
One thing all batteries have in common is that they do not like heat. Overheating can damage a battery by causing water to evaporate faster and the internal plates to warp. This can happen when using the wrong charger.
Proper Charging Methods Matter
Following the correct charging methods can help extend battery life and improve performance. (See the Battery Care Section to learn more.)
