Why Lithium Is So Popular
Lithium batteries have become very popular, especially for customers looking to switch from lead-acid batteries. They have earned their reputation for safety, longer lifespan, and efficiency. But it’s important to know, not all lithium batteries are the same.
What Sets Them Apart
The difference comes down to what the battery is made up of and how it reacts to temperature. Lithium batteries respond to temperature differently than lead-acid batteries, which is something every owner should understand.
The Importance of a BMS
One of the most important features to look for is a Battery Management System (BMS). A BMS monitors the lithium with temperature sensors for a safer system. It will only allow the battery to charge when conditions are safe. This protection is important for a longer life of the battery.
Not all lithium batteries come with temperature sensors or internal heaters. Not having these safety features may save money upfront, but it can shorten the life of your battery.
Cold Weather Performance
Lithium batteries with a BMS will charge above 32°F, but will not charge below that temperature. Lithium batteries can still operate in temperatures as low as -32°F, but they will need to warm back up to at least 32°F before charging.
In colder climates, there will be shorter run times just like with lead-acid batteries. The good news is lithium batteries still hold a charge longer overall.
Protecting Your Investment
To get the most out of your lithium battery, invest in a quality product with a BMS and take care of it properly. Cold weather doesn’t hurt a well-built lithium battery, but proper storage is key.
Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for how to store your lithium battery. Avoid extreme cold when possible, and never store your battery at a low state of charge. Keep in mind that lithium batteries typically lose about 1% of their charge per month, giving them a long shelf life.
Getting Ready to Use Your Battery
When you’re ready to use your lithium-powered golf car again, unplug it about a day before using it. Then “wake up” the battery by either turning the key on or powering up the battery. Once the BMS is fully awake, plug the charger back in and leave it on, your lithium battery should be good.
Final Thought
A well-maintained battery means your golf car is ready when you are, so you can get out and enjoy the ride!
